What Am I?One of the things I have found about working through the web is my inability to correctly give myself a title ie. a name which explains what I do for a living. Lot’s of people online seem to be using the term ‘Entrepreneur’ but I really hate it, it’s kinda pompous in my opinion.

When applying for something, for example a loan, you need to write the name of your profession. In the last few year’s I have wrote ‘Web Developer‘. Webmaster is probably a more accurate description but I thought Web Developer sounded better :)

Meeting people for the first time there would come a point where they would inevitably ask you what you do. When I explain I’m self employed via the internet and that I make money through advertising they usually reply ‘Oh, you’re a web designer’. This is usually followed by a reference that a cousin or uncle needs a website built and I then need to backtrack and explain that whilst I can design websites from scratch, I’m not a web designer and usually leave that aspect to people who are good at it. I don’t believe that explaining an online job to people who are not nev savvy is ever going to be easy!!

In the last few months I have sold my poker forums and several other websites which I owned. This has helped me clear the debt I had from travelling last year and gave me a chance to work on some other projects. Other than my online shop project with my friend Eddie, lately I have been working mainly on my blogs and when someone recently asked me what I do and I told them I’m currently running some blogs etc they replied ‘Oh so you’re a blogger’. It seems that whereas a lot of people struggle to understand how people can build websites specifically for profit, most people understand how blogging works.

With blogging taking up most of my time now I am more than happy to use the title ‘Blogger’. It’s pretty much what I am until I start another non-blog project and it seems to keep the non-savvy people happy! ;)

What do you call yourself? Do you constantly find yourself having to explain to people exactly what you do?

:)

Plenty of times :) I used to put ‘Internet Consultant’ on my business card, after all I’d have clients coming to me with questions and needs relating to hosting, emails, domains as well as website design and development. Now I go for Web Developer/Consultant, again the consultant part is because I find myself constantly answering questions, now all I need to do is charge a consulting fee!

A friend of mine runs his own hosting business, for years his Mum believed he didn’t earn any money and was kept by his other half who went out to work! Every few months she’d ask him when would he get a proper job. Luckily I’ve not had that yet, considering my Mum does my accounts, she’s more than aware that I earn a respectable income.

The best issue is when you phone up for something eg. insurance, and they ask for your job title, then finally put you down as a computer programmer as nothing else fits.

yeah ive had that before. I got something similar when I entered Australia a few years ago and eventually the customs guy said ’so your a software developer’ and I just nodded my head.

Oh my how I feel your pain. I also have issues with getting myself a title: I own my design firm, I am mainly a web designer, but also forum manager, content creator, blogger etc. The nice thing is that most of the time people have no clue about what I do online, so I just tell them I work on the computer :D

And on my business card I am just Ramona Iftode .. in the end I want them to have my number and url, the rest is solved at the business meeting :)

Good point. I had business cards for my old forum made up 2 years ago because I was playing poker so much - it was just easier to hand over a card than to explain what I do.

Think if I get personal business cards made up I’ll just made something really self important like ‘President’ or ‘CEO’ haha. That’s a joke but over the years I’ve had hundreds of ‘one man bands’ contact me and refer to themselves as CEO at the end of their email. Of course your CEO, your the only person in the company. You’re also the secretary, the cleaner, the accountant etc

It’s like in the Simpsons when Homer calls himself ‘Junior Vice President’!

[...] posted last month that after selling my poker discussion forums I wasn’t sure what to call myself as the websites which I have left are nearly all blogs (apart from a few forums and article sites [...]
