I’ve read loads of tech sites over the last few days talking about the release of the new 3G iPhone. I got to use the first iPhone went out came out the other year. Then it was lacking 3G support when every new phone had it. They have rectified that but they have kept the 2 megapixel camera.
I’m not disputing that the iPhone is a nice gadget however it really does lack in a lot of areas. Remember, this is a device you need to use day in day out. Heres why this phone never interested me :
- There are no hard keys. I have used a few HTC mobiles and a few LG mobiles which had no hard keys and whilst the touch screens work ok however they are far from perfect. I like my phones to have keys.
- Only has a 2 megapixel camera. Why didn’t they put a good camera in this phone? The Sony Ericcson W900i phone I bought about 2 and a half years ago had a 2 megapixel camera!
- No 3G Video Calling - A 3G phone without the ability yo use 3G video calls??
- The amount of memory is really good but feature wise it really lacks behind a lot of phones out available today
The main reason why I’m not considering a new phone
The main reason I’m not considering a new phone is because I just got one 2 weeks ago. I got the Nokia N82.
The N82 is one of the best phones available in Nokias N-Series range. One of the main reasons I bought this phone was it’s camera. It has a 5 megapixel camera. The camera boasts a Carl Zeiss lens, a shutter to stop dust and best of all an Xenon flash. I thought about getting the Nokia N95 8GB however the shutter and improved flash swung the N82 in my favour.
My last phone had a 2 megalpixel camera and whilst it was good for the odd fun snap, it was a terribly poor camera and the pictures at night were awful. The quality of pictures with this phone is even better than my Sony T7 camera, and that cost me £350 a few years ago.
Of course, being a smartphone the N82 has a huge amount of features. It came with a 2gb micro SD card however I’ve ordered an 8GB one. It has a built in GPS receiver and has Nokia Maps built in, it really works well. Didn’t think I’d see the day I’d have Sat Nav on my phone!!
It also has wifi, 3g video calls, mp3 player, n-gage gaming, push email support and some handy applications like quick office. You can also install applications for skype, twitter and msn etc.
Again, the main reason I love this phone is the camera. When I was in New York in March I hardly took any pictures because I had to carry about a camera and my phone. I only really had room for a phone in my front pocket so the camera was always left…haha, yes, it came down to jean pocket space!! Seriously, this truly is the all in one device I have been looking for. I’m going on holiday in 4 weeks so I’m sure I’ll use it a lot.
What phone do you currently have? Do you have anything in mind for your next phone?

I have N82 Black
I think that in about a year from now, Nokia will make something along the lines of N82, but thinner, and wider (VGA screen?) with the same or better camera and improved battery life. Build quality is such that I do not expect this phone to last longer than a year. Glass is not scratch resistant, and function keys will wear out. So, if they make a new one with metal and glass body, VGA and keep same camera, I am in. Or maybe WinMo7 will bring some interesting devices…
I ordered a crystal case for it the other day because im scared the screen will get scratched.
Nokia definately have a lot of cool phones coming out in the next year, as does Sony E. The N96 is kind of like an improved version of the N95 except it is thinner, a stand so you can watch movies and 16gb hard drive (amongst many things).
I’ve currently got the N73 although I’m due for an upgrade in July. I was thinking about the N95 as I love the N73 except there’s no wireless. I’ve not gone in the shops yet to see how the phone looks but have to say the N82 looks quite nice too. I assume it has bluetooth? The GPS and maps sounds handy to have even though I wouldn’t need it often. The camera isn’t so much of an issue as I rare take photos on my phone, but a nice handy camera is good all the same.
I’ll have to see what Vodaphone will offer me when I call them!
The N95 is the one which has been out for close to a year and a half. The N95 8gb has only been out a few months and I believe that has wifi.
I was actually with vodafone but my contract was ending and they were not offering me a good deal so I took an 18 month contract with orange. I got the N82 for free, 600 monthly minutes and unlimited texts. You can get the same deal with the N95 8GB by paying £50 up front (then its £30 a month).
I was reluctant to take an 18 month contract but its impossible to get a good deal on a 12 month contract now.
Ahh sorry I re-read my post and realised I missed a comma. The N95 does have wireless, always had, except it wasn’t available last Jan on Vodaphone when I renewed my contract. I’ve just checked the vodaphone site and there’s no sight of the N82. So I guess I’ll have to go for the N95 as I don’t want to move suppliers.
Yes I think orange have an exclusive on the N82, at least for a few months. I think the other networks will get it later.
Personally, I’ve moved just about every time my contract has ended because they rarely give you as good a deal for renewing as they did for a new customer. I’ve never been able to udnerstand the logic of being happy to lose a customer by offering a poorer deal than their new customers.
If you wanna stay with vodafone though, id definately try and get the N95 8gb. My mates have the N95 and its a great phone, the 8gb version is better and looks amazing in black so I hope I dont see someone with it or I’ll get phone regret!!!
[...] Chris uses the Nokia N95, I decided to go for the Nokia N82 when I got a new phone a few weeks ago. I was seriously considering the N95 as a few of my friends [...]
I’ve got the Sony Ericsson K550i which has got a 2MP camera w/ flash and all the flash(BlueTooth, External memory, etc) . Although its not gr8, it still is better than a crappy old K510!
I’m thinking of buyin the N73 (or its music edition) soon. real classy, the phone.
It’s interesting reading people’s preferences. I have an iPhone (original). It does everything that I need and am quite happy with it, though as with every phone I’ve used or tried, it leaves some things to be desired. The preferences you list aren’t so important to me (each to his own).
For example, my photo preferences are different. I’m an amateur photographer, so I use a full-blown SLR with proper lenses &c. I’ve not used a phone camera that can satisfy, regardless of how many megapixels it may have. I do use the phone camera for quick, rough stuff that I don’t care about.
